Every advisor claims sector focus. Very few can say what it changes about the outcome.
Focus is a shortlist, not a credential
Sector knowledge is only worth something when it shortens the distance between a company and the ten people who will actually write the cheque. That is a function of knowing which funds deployed into the sector in the last two quarters, at what size, and who ran the process. It is not a function of having a page about it on a website.
The difference shows up in reply rates and in the quality of a first meeting. A generalist introduction earns a polite hearing. A targeted one earns a diligence list.
Where it stops mattering
Sector focus does not repair a broken model, an unclear use of proceeds, or a cap table that cannot absorb the round. It compresses timelines for companies that are already fundable. Treating it as a substitute for readiness is the most reliable way for a good business to lose a good quarter.
